Enjoying Retirement

My husband Hal and I retired five years ago on January 15 and we never looked back. We retired at a younger age than most people do in this day and age, Hal was 58 and I was 55 at the time, but we had always planned to leave our jobs while we were both healthy and active so that we could enjoy our golden years by filling them with as much adventure as possible.

We spent six months of our first year in retirement traveling abroad. We rented a pied a terre in the 7th arrondissement in Paris and spent our days immersed in the Parisian lifestyle. On weekends, we traveled to neighboring countries, visiting Italy, England, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Portugal. It was everything we had dreamt it would be, but we were nonetheless excited to return home when our lease ended and get back to see our kids and grandchildren. We realized that we wanted to explore the world, but that we didn’t want to do it at the expense of not being able to watch our grandkids grow up.

Upon reevaluating our retirement plans, we purchased a luxurious home on wheels, one of those Gulf Stream travel trailers. We still kept our home in Pasadena and we decided to use Conquest travel trailers to see all of the sights that America had to offer. A few of our friends had bought Conquest travel trailers before, so they helped Hal and me choose what model we should purchase from the wide variety of Gulf Stream travel trailers. We ended up getting an RV that was spacious enough so that our grandkids could join us on the road during summer break.

Next month, we're leaving for a tour of the Pacific coast, straight up to Anchorage, Alaska. If you are considering spending your retirement on the road, Hal and I highly recommend it! Just make sure that you get a comfortable home-away-from-home to travel in.
